Description

A saucy, messy sandwich that brings comfort and nostalgia, perfect for weeknights and casual gatherings.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried mustard (or yellow mustard)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 8 sandwich buns, split

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat, combine beef and onion. Cook until the meat is mostly browned, about 5 minutes. Drain well.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire, mustard, and salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Pour the sauce ingredients over drained beef and stir until evenly coated. Simmer uncovered for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Serve in buns.

Notes

For a vegan option, substitute ground beef with crumbled tempeh or lentils and use a vegan Worcestershire sauce.
