Description

Warm and spiced slow cooker French toast casserole perfect for gatherings, enveloping your senses in sweet maple, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 24 ounces stale Brioche bread (or French/Challah)
  • ½ cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • ¼ cup real maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup butter (sliced)
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Grease the slow cooker insert with nonstick spray or soft butter.
  2. Cut the stale bread into 1-inch cubes and layer them in the slow cooker insert, sprinkling chopped pecans if using.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg until blended.
  4. Pour the custard mixture over the layered bread and pecans, ensuring all pieces are coated.
  5. Let sit for a few hours, preferably covering it to absorb the custard.
  6. Cut the butter into small pieces and mix the brown sugar with the extra cinnamon in a separate bowl.
  7. Sprinkle the brown sugar mixture and butter pieces on top before cooking.
  8. Cover and cook on HIGH for 2 to 2.5 hours or on LOW for 3 to 4 hours until set and risen.
  9. Serve warm topped with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit.

Notes

Allowing the casserole to sit overnight enhances flavor. Adjust cooking time based on slow cooker specifics.
