A soft and sweet bread that combines honey and buttermilk for an irresistible flavor that warms the soul.
Ingredients

- 1 tablespoon yeast
- 1 pinch powdered ginger
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 cup warm water (105°F – 110°F)
- 2 cups warm cultured buttermilk (105°F – 110°F)
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 6 cups bread flour
- 1/4 cup melted butter (cooled to warm)
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, mix the yeast, powdered ginger, sugar, and warm water. Let it rest for about 5 minutes until it bubbles and becomes foamy.
- In another bowl, whisk together the warm buttermilk, honey, salt, and baking soda until well blended. Combine this mixture with the foamy yeast.
- Gradually add 3 cups of flour into the bowl, mixing for 3-5 minutes until the mixture is smooth and cohesive.
- Slowly pour in the melted butter, mixing continuously until it’s fully incorporated into the dough.
- Gradually add the remaining flour, one cup at a time, mixing each addition until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Transfer the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover it, and allow it to rise in a warm place for about 90 minutes or until doubled in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough gently, then divide it into two equal portions and shape each into a loaf, placing them in greased pans.
- Cover the loaves again and let them rise for another 45 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F and bake the loaves for approximately 30 minutes. If they darken too quickly, loosely cover them with foil.
- For a shiny finish, brush the tops with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven. Allow to cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
Notes
This bread can be made in a bread machine. Make sure to use bread flour for the best texture.
